Russian Foreign Ministry urged on Friday the leaders of Kenya to solve political disputes through dialogue and halt the nationwide riots thereafter, which have killed hundreds of people in Kenya since the Dec. 27 election.
Russia is deeply concerned about what has happened in Kenya, the ministry said in a statement released on its official website on Friday.
Political disputes triggered by the December elections have evolved into large-scale inter-ethnic conflicts, which have not only led to bloodshed but also made negative impact on the country's social development and economic growth, said the statement.
The political leaders of Kenya should take urgent steps to contain the violence and help the country maintain peace and stability, it said.
The crisis should be solved according to Kenya's existing Constitution through political dialogue between the government and opposition parties, the statement said.
More than 800 have perished and over 200 thousand people have been displaced in violence erupted following the disputed presidential election on Dec. 27 as supporters of both President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga has clashed almost nationwide.
It also said that Russia hailed the efforts made by the former U.N. chief Kofi Annan who has been mediating a dialogue between Kibaki and Odinga in a bid to solve the crisis, which has engulfed the east African nation.
