An Indonesian police officer was killed and three others were injured after an armed clash with soldiers in Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku, local press reported Saturday.

"I received information that one policeman was killed and three other officers were injured during the clash," National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Sisno Adiwinoto was quoted by leading news website Detikcom as saying.

"The incident was triggered by personal quarrel between officers from the police and the military," he said without elaborating.

The situation in Central Maluku remained tense Saturday morning, with armed policemen tightly guarded the headquarters in the regency.

Provincial military commander and police chief have met and inspected the scene to lead an investigation and calm their subordinates, Sisno said.
