California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said on Friday, days ahead of the California primary, that his state would play a vital role in the U.S. presidential campaign.
"It is clear California will play a big role in picking the White House nominees," Schwarzenegger said in a radio address. "This is why all the candidates are scrambling for our votes."
California and some other states will hold elections in choosing presidential candidates on Feb. 5, known as "Super Tuesday."
Schwarzenegger attended the Republican debate at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley on Wednesday. The Democrats had their debate in Los Angeles the following day.
"We are hearing the candidates answering California voters' questions not just delivering the 10-second sound bites that we get in the commercials," Schwarzenegger said.
The California governor said the state leads the nation and the world on so many issues, such as fighting global warming, stem cell research, biotechnology and so on.
This is why candidates cannot neglect the state, he added.
"We are finally getting the attention we deserve. No matter who will be the next President, it (the White House race) can only help California," said the governor.
Schwarzenegger encouraged all Californians, regardless of political affiliation, to get to the polls on "Super Tuesday" and exercise one of the most important freedoms they have in the country.
"This is a big election that has inspired record turnouts across the nation," he said.
