Afghan police backed by NATO's air power have cleared several villages from Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan's southern Uruzgan province besides eliminating three rebels, a statement of Afghanistan Interior Ministry said Saturday.

"In the operation launched 10 days ago and supported by NATO aircraft in Deh Rawad district, three militants have been killed and several villages have been cleaned up of militants," the statement added.

A huge quantity of arms and ammunition and three wireless sets have also been seized by the police, it further stressed.

The mop up would continue till the complete elimination of Deh Rawad and adjoining area from the rebels, the statement emphasized.

Taliban have yet to make comment.

More than 6,000 people had been killed in the bloodiest year in2007 since the collapse of Taliban regime six years ago in Afghanistan.
