Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney Saturday won the preference voting contest in Maine in the party's municipal caucuses.

Romney, former Massachusetts governor, won over 50 percent of the vote in the caucuses, while John McCain came in second with over 20 percent, followed by Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee.

Republican caucuses were being held in about 410 Maine municipalities from Friday to Sunday, most Saturday.

The Republicans have so far held their presidential primary in eight states, with McCain winning in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida, Romney winning in Michigan, Wyoming, Nevada, Maine, and Huckabee in Iowa.
