U.S. President George W. Bush telephoned Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on Monday to congratulate him on becoming prime minister, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.
"They briefly discussed the importance of U.S.-Thai relations, and President Bush said he looks forward to seeing the Prime Minister in the future," she told reporters.
Thailand's newly elected House of Representatives or Lower House in late January voted People Power Party (PPP) leader Samak Sundaravej as the country's new prime minister.
Samak, 72, is an outspoken veteran politician. He is Thailand's25th prime minister after the military top brass toppled the former elected government led by Thaksin Shinawatra in a military coup on September 19, 2006 and appointed an interim government led by a retired general Surayud Chulanont.
The United States has been in good relations with Thailand, which is believed a key U.S. diplomatic and non-NATO ally.
