Russia will further its relations with Serbia and support its desire to maintain the nation's territorial integrity, a senior member of the State Duma, lower house of the parliament, said on Monday.
"Russian-Serb relations will be further developed. So far as problems of territorial integrity are concerned, we shall continue to support the Serb leaders and hope to prevent a collapse of the situation by joint efforts," Itar-Tass news agency quoted Konstantin Kosachev, head of the State Duma committee for international affairs, as saying.
Serbia's incumbent President Boris Tadic won about 51 percent in the tightly-contested presidential run-off on Sunday, defeating his rival Tomislav Nikolic who won about 47 percent of the votes, preliminary poll results indicated.
Russia's regards the presidential elections in Serbia was "obviously neutral" and will "work with anyone who wins the presidential campaign," Kosachev said.
Both Tadic and Nikolic oppose the independence of Kosovo, a breakaway province of Serbia under UN administration. But Tadic has ruled out the use of force and would likely to seek to preserve close ties with the EU and the United States even if they recognize Kosovo's independence. Source:Xinhua
