Russia has evacuated families of its embassy staff in Chad but the embassy continues to work, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
"The Russian Embassy in Ndjamena continues to work. Security measures have been tightened under the current situation. The families of embassy staff have been evacuated to Gabon with French support," Interfax news agency quoted foreign ministry source as saying.
Heavy fighting broke out last Friday near Ndjamena between government forces and armed rebels trying to ouster President Idriss Deby, arousing grave concerns around the world and causing dozens of civilian casualties.
Many foreigners have been evacuated from the war-torn country, but it is reported that there are still some 560 foreigners at three emergency assembly points in the city waiting to be airlifted.
Moscow has been following events in Chad with deep concern, since the opposition's clashes with government troops resulted in numerous deaths and brought destruction to the capital, the foreign ministry said.
"The abrupt escalation of the situation in Chad has created not only a threat of large-scale destabilization in that country but has also seriously complicated the situation in the region," it said.
Moscow is backing the peace efforts of the leaders of African nations working under the mandate of the African Union, it said. Source:Xinhua
