Two employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have been missing in Pakistan since Saturday, Feb. 2, the Geneva-based humanitarian agency said on Monday.
The two employees were on a routine logistical mission in an ICRC-marked vehicle to Torkham, a border town between Pakistan and Afghanistan, when the ICRC's team in Peshawar lost radio and phone contact with them, the agency said in a statement.
The disappearance took place in one of Pakistan's federally administered tribal areas and on a road regularly used to transport relief goods to Afghanistan, the statement added.
The ICRC said it was concerned about the fate of the two staff members, who are both Pakistani nationals.
"We are in direct contact with the national and local authorities, in order to ascertain the circumstances of their disappearance, their current status and whereabouts, and to ensure that they return safe and sound," said Marc Achermann, the acting head of the ICRC's team in Peshawar.
"The safety of our staff is key to ensuring that people affected by armed violence receive the assistance they need," he said.
