The UN Security Council urged on Monday Ethiopia and Eritrea, the two African countries locked in a bitter border dispute, to normalize their relations.
The council demanded that both countries "immediately take concrete steps in order to complete the process launched by the Peace Agreement of 12 December 2000, while urging them to normalize their relations," said a statement read out by council President Ricardo Alberto Arias of Panama.
The 15-member council reiterated a call on Eritrea to resume immediately fuel shipments to the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, known as UNMEE, or allow UNMEE to import fuel without restrictions.
Council members are "very seriously concerned about the fact that the fuel restrictions have not yet been lifted," the statement said.
The UN Security Council decided last Wednesday to extended the mandate of UNMEE for a period of six months, until 31 July 2008.
In June 2000, after two years of fighting in a border dispute, Ethiopia and Eritrea signed a cessation of hostilities agreement. In July, the Security Council set up UNMEE to monitor the border between the two countries.
