A suicide bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint manned by anti-al-Qaida group members in a village in north of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing several of the group members, police said.
"A suicide bomber blew up his explosive vest at a checkpoint outside the house of Sheikh Shather al-Obeidi, head of a Sunnitribe that formed an Awakening Council group in the Awad village in Taji area, 30 km north of Baghdad," the source said on condition of anonymity.
The source could not immediately give exact number of human casualties by the attack, but confirmed that several members of the group were killed and others wounded, the source said.
The Awakening Councils fighters are armed groups of tribesmen and local neighborhoods, including some powerful anti-U.S. Sunniinsurgent groups, who have turned their rifles toward the al-Qaida network after the latter adopted a hardline Islam and exercised indiscriminate killings against both Shiite and Sunni Muslim communities.
