At least six Hamas members were killed on Tuesday when an Israeli air-to-ground missile struck a Hamas police headquarters in the southern Gaza Strip, local daily Ha'aretz reported on its website.

The Israeli army confirmed the air strike in east of the town Khan Yunis, in response to Qassam rockets fired from Gaza into southern Israel Tuesday morning, said the report.

Islam Shahwan, a spokesman for the Hamas police, said the strike hit the police station in the southern Gaza village of Abassan, adding that the men were performing afternoon prayers when the building was hit.

According to the report, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said Israel would pay a high price for "these crimes."

Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli troops killed two Palestinian gunmen from the Hamas movement near the town of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

Israeli troops frequently carry out raids in the Gaza Strip to hunt suspect militants who launched rockets into Israel.
