Pakistan said Wednesday that it had done more than any other country to counter the challenge of the al-Qaeda.

"We do not need to repeat that. Pakistan has given more sacrifices than any other country in this war," Foreign Ministry spokesman Muhammad Sadiq said in response to comments by U.S. intelligence chief that al-Qaeda and the Taliban were present in Pakistan's tribal region.

Mike McConnell, U.S. director of national intelligence, has said that the tribal areas of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan remain a sanctuary for Islamist terrorist activity.

"What Pakistan has done to counter the challenge of the al-Qaeda and to counter the challenge of terrorism is well known," the Pakistani spokesman told a press briefing.

"Pakistan has given more sacrifices than any other country in this war. We think that its a challenge to the Pakistani society and a challenge to Pakistan a nation," Sadiq said. "We are very serious about it. There should be no doubt in this regard."
