The situation in Nepali capital Kathmandu seemed to calm down Wednesday night as supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) began to rush away from an office of its youth league after clashing with police there.
Security in Kathmandu has been tightened Wednesday night after the police surrounded the office of the Young Communist League (YCL) at Balaju in the northwest part of Kathmandu.
According to witness, one hour after the surrounding, YCL cadres and CPN-M supporters pelted stones on the policemen outside the office and about 30 confronted policemen had fired around 12 rounds of tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The clash appeared to end soon after CPN-M supporters outside the office began to rush away. Police officials on the spot also said the issue would be solved by negotiation between police and YCL leader inside the office, and they "will go back later."
However, some CPN-M supporters are holding rallies, chanting slogans and burning tires in different parts of Kathmandu including sections of the Ring Road.
The police said they went to the YCL Balaju office with the order from Nepali Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula to clear the place. Police officials on the spot told Xinhua they suspected there might be weapons in the office.
Some 100 Nepali policemen with guns and sticks entered the office to talk with YCL leaders, but later came out to join another over 200 surrounding the Balaju office.
Inside the YCL Balaju office, there are around 300 YCL members, while outside the office, CPN-M supporters and YCL cadres chanted slogans against policemen.
Chandra Bahadur Thapa (party name "sagar"), YCL in-charge of Kathmandu valley, told Xinhua by phone that when the police came, the YCL leaders of Kathmandu valley were holding meeting in Balaju office.
