The European Union (EU) has urged all communities in Nepal to respect the rule of law, and participate in the April 10 Constituent Assembly (CA) elections to bring the country closer to peace, democracy and stability, according to local media on Thursday.
Wrapping up a four-day visit to Nepal Thursday, Jan Mulder, Chief Election Observer of the EU election observation mission said that free and fair elections cannot be held under the threat of violence, reported the houses website THT online.
Mulder's visit took place in the context of the long-standing willingness of the EU to send an election observation mission at the request of the Nepali government.
During his stay here, Mulder met with government ministers and the Election Commission (EC) officials and listened to a wide range of high ranking government officials, political parties, civil society and representatives of the international community, a statement issued by the EU said.
The deployment of members of the core team for the EU election observation mission will take place in early March followed by phased deployment of long term observers and short term observers to a total of around 100 observers on April 10 election day, the EU said, adding that the task of the EU mission will be to neutrally observe the elections in Nepal.
