Passengers on a flight from the New Zealand cities of Blenheim to Christchurch spent a nerve-wracking 20 minutes in the air on Friday after a woman stabbed the pilots and threatened to blow up the plane.

Police said a mayday call was received at 7.40 a.m. (18:40 GMT Thursday) from an Air New Zealand flight operated by Eagle Air traveling from Blenheim to Christchurch.

The pilots on board reported that a female passenger had attacked them in the cockpit inflicting minor injuries, before she was removed from the cockpit.

The passenger also made threats of a bomb being on board, police confirmed.

The plane landed safely shortly after 8 a.m. and all passengers safely disembarked.

Police said the woman was in custody within five minutes. A knife was found on her and another on the tarmac.

The six remaining passengers on board were taken to an airport conference room where they were being questioned by police.

Police said one pilot received several cuts to his hand and another an injury to his foot. The injuries were not believed to be life threatening and the pilots were being treated in hospital.

The plane was being thoroughly searched after the woman claimed to have two bombs on board. So far, none had been found, but the plane would soon be taken off the runway to a hangar where a thorough scene investigation could be carried out.
