Ukraine's state gas and oil company Naftogaz said on Friday it had no debts to Russian gas company Gazprom and promised it would ensure uninterrupted transit of Russian natural gas to European countries.
"We have no debts to Gazprom. We will carry out our obligations to Gazprom and RosUkrEenergo by ensuring uninterrupted transit of all volumes in full to European countries," Naftogaz said in a statement.
Naftogaz said any suggestion of debts was a question to be addressed to RosUkrEnergo, an intermediary which provides a mix of gas from Russia and ex-Soviet Central Asia to Ukraine.
Gazprom said Ukraine owes Russia 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in back payments for its gas and threatened to cut supplies from Feb.11 unless arrears were paid.
Gazprom said on Friday that Ukraine was not willing to resolve a dispute over gas debts, making it more likely to cut supplies to Ukraine next week.
