Four people were injured in an exchange of fire between the Panamanian police and suspected Colombian anti-government group in the waters off Panama's border with Colombia, said a statement of the Panamanian president's office on Saturday.

A Panamanian patrol boat found what appeared to be a stranded vessel off the coast of Darien, a Panamanian province bordering Colombia, on Friday, and when they neared the land, the Colombians took out weapons and asked to be taken elsewhere, said the statement.

A Panamanian officer and three Colombians were injured in the gunfire, said the statement, noting Panamanian reinforcement came later and took the Colombians into custody.

The police also seized uniforms with the FARC logo.

The FARC, with some 12,000 fighters, is Colombia's largest anti-government group and has been fought against the government for decades.
