Unknown gunmen critically wounded the head of the Iraqi Journalists' Union in Baghdad on Saturday, a well-informed police source said.
"Gunmen in a civilian car opened fire on Shihab al-Timimi, the chief of the Iraqi Journalists' Union, outside the union building in central Baghdad," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Timimi, in his 70s, was critically wounded and evacuated to a nearby hospital, he said.
Earlier, the union said that more than 250 Iraqi journalists have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
The international media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, said that the war in Iraq has proved to be the deadliest for journalists since World War II.
"No country has ever seen more journalists killed than Iraq," the international watchdog said.
