The government will adopt an electronic governance strategy by June this year to help change the work-practice of bureaucrats, enabling them to serve citizens in a more effective way, leading English newspaper The Financial Express reported on Sunday.
Science and information technology ministry has assigned Price Waterhouse Coopers, a global consultancy, to draft the e-governance strategy, which is expected to modernize the functions of the state machinery.
"The government offices still run on the traditional mode. The strategy aims to stimulate the use of more technology in offices," an official was quoted by the newspaper.
"Equipment is there. But few are benefiting from those. Government officials are still used to manual filing system. They have no sophisticated data base, nor there are tools to serve the citizens in a more efficient way," the official added.
Officials said the objective of preparing the strategy is to augment the interface between the bureaucracy and the people, as the majority of officials are not skilled enough to handle the information technology properly.
The formulation of the strategy is part of the government's broader goal of establishing e-governance in all ministries and government agencies in a bid to reduce corruption. Bangladesh has a plan to expand such a system even at the sub-district level.
Experts say establishment of e-governance will help cut corruption and bring about transparency in the government.
