The Chinese Seismological Network detected a strong earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale in southern Sumatra, Indonesia, (S. 2.4 and E. 100.0), at 4:36 p.m. on Monday (Beijing Time).
The epicenter was located at about 100 km to the nearest coastline, 180 km to Sumatra's Padang, and 300 km to Bengkulu, southern Sumatra.
The National Earthquake Information Center, based in the United States, has issued a tsunami warning after the quake.
