The United Nations Special Envoy to Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari and top Singapore leaders on Monday welcomed Myanmar's declaration on holding a referendum and elections, while noting the referendum and elections have to "be credible and inclusive".
Gambari, who is visiting Singapore from Feb. 23-26 as part of his regional consultation tour, met with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Foreign Minister George Yeo, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
During his meeting with Yeo, they "noted positively" the announcement by the Myanmar Government on the holding of a referendum on the new Constitution in May 2008 and the General Elections in 2010, said the statement.
"However, they felt that for national reconciliation to be achieved, the referendum and elections had to be credible and inclusive," said the ministry.
Gambari will leave Singapore Tuesday. He planned to visit Myanmar next week to resume talks with the Myanmar government. Source: Xinhua
