Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has dismissed news reports regarding the killing of12 Nepali workers in Iraq, the leading website nepalnews.com reported Monday.

MoFA spokesperson Hira Bahadur Thapa said Nepali embassies in Islamabad and Saudi Arabia reported to the ministry, after being asked to find out the truth, that so far no proof had been found to corroborate the news.

The embassy officials had checked with the Iraqi diplomatic missions in Islamabad and Saudi Arabia over the matter, the website quoted the MoFA as saying.

Meanwhile, citing news reports, a MoFA statement said the footage posted on the internet was that of 12 Nepalis slain in Iraq in 2004. The ministry also appealed to all the Nepalis not to believe the false news.

Some Western reports said that an Iraqi militant group, Army of Ansar al-Sunna, posted a video on the Internet on Monday showing the killings of 12 Nepali men who it said worked for a Nepali company with a United States (US) contract.

The video showed pictures of one being beheaded and the others with bullet wounds to the head and back.

An insurgent group had killed 12 Nepalis in August 2004, which had triggered angry protests in Nepal that resulted in massive arson and looting of private and public properties in the capital Kathmandu and elsewhere around the country.
