Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party on Tuesday accused its rival Islamic Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, of arresting eight of Fatah supporters.

The eight were taken during the past couple of days in various place in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, Fatah said in a statement sent to the press.

According to the statement, "the coup-maker movement of Hamas" also kidnapped Major Mohammed Aqel, who works in the Presidential Guard, from his house and tortured him for seven hours.

Meanwhile, Hamas said the pro-Abbas forces arrested five of its members in the West Bank.

Hamas ousted Fatah and pro-President Abbas' forces from Gaza in June last year following fierce fighting. After the takeover, Abbas fired a Hamas-led government and formed a new Western-backed cabinet ruling from the West Bank.

Since June, the two rivals started a clean up against each other in every side's field of dominance: the Fatah-dominated West Bank and Hamas' Gaza.
