Rescuers recovered 26 bodies so far after a passenger launch with about 150 passengers on board capsized in the Buriganga river on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital Dhaka Thursday afternoon.
Police said the MV Sourav launch was sailing from Dhaka Sadarghat Terminal for Munshiganj, about 30 km southeast of Dhaka, but it soon capsized after being hit by a sand carrying cargo near the Buriganga First Bridge at about 3 p.m. local time (0900 GMT).
Private news agency bdnews24 quoted the police as saying when the accident occurred, about 70 people jumped off the vessel and swam to safety.
Fire brigade and coast guard divers have recovered 26 bodies. The rescuers feared that dozens of passengers were still missing. The death toll may go up further.
Local television NTV quoted one passenger who survived as saying many passengers remained trapped inside the launch.
