Six German army instructors were convicted on Wednesday of abusing recruits in an unprecedented scandal involving Germany's postwar army, local court officials said.
A state court based in western German city of Muenster handed five army instructors suspended prison terms of between 10 and 22 months, and their commander was fined 7,500 euros (about 11,600 U.S. dollars).
The army instructors have been found guilty of beating, kicking, electrocuting and forcing water into the noses of recruits during simulated hostage-taking exercises at a training base in the western German town of Coesfeld back in 2004.
About 163 recruits are said to be victims of the abuse.
