The suspect who murdered a Chinese student in downtown Paris on March 16 was arrested, according to a statement by Xu Jiangong, the Chinese consulate general to France, on March 18. The suspect was one of two young men arrested at the scene of the crime.
The Chinese Embassy to France said, on the afternoon of March 18, that they learned of the suspect's arrest from the Paris Police Bureau. The weapon was a penknife. The case has already been delivered to the judicial bureau.
Xu said that the Chinese Embassy expressed its appreciation, on behalf of the victim's relatives, to the Paris police for closing the case so quickly. The Chinese Embassy also expressed their condolences to the relatives of the victim with a commitment to follow the case closely.
The Chinese police bureau is expected to coordinate a trip for the victim's family to go to France in order to handle the aftermath. Passports will be issued on March 19.
"The French people are friendly to the Chinese. This is not a racial conflict or material affair; just one incident," Xu said.
