Bucharest will host a NATO summit on April 2-4 in its Parliament Palace, the largest international event ever staged in Romania.

With an area of 330,000 square meters, the palace is the world's second largest building after the U.S. Pentagon. There are 12 floors above ground and 8 underground, hosting 1,000 rooms, in addition to two parking lots and a concert hall. It is 270 meters long, 245 meters wide and 86 meters high, visible from any point in the city.

As many as 1,000,000 cubic meters of marble, 5,500 tonnes of cement, 7,000 tonnes of steel, 20,000 tonnes of sand, 1,000 tonnes of basalt, 900,000 cubic meters of wood, 3,500 tonnes of crystal, 200,000 cubic meters of glass, 2,800 candelabras, 220,000 square meters of floor carpets and some 3,500 square meters of leather were used to build the palace by 700 architects and 20,000 workers in 1984-1989.

The building is now mainly used to host Romania's parliament, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Many international events are also held there.

Heads of state or government from 26 NATO member states will attend the summit in the Union Hall, the largest room in the building, which features a sliding glass ceiling that could support the weight of a helicopter.
