The U.S. State Department confirmed Friday that top nuclear negotiators from the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will meet in Singapore next week.
State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill will meet with Kim Kye Gwan, the DPRK's vice foreign minister and head of the DPRK delegation to the six-party talks, in Singapore next Tuesday.
"On Tuesday the 8th, he (Hill) will then have a meeting with Kim Kye Gwan, his North Korean counterpart in the six-party talks," Casey said.
"This meeting, again, as I said this morning, a follow-up on the discussions that were held in Geneva last month," Casey said.
"This is going to be a follow-up on the talks held in Geneva last month. I'm sure they will cover both issues related to the declaration itself, as well as the implementation of the disablement phase of talks," Casey added.
Hill, who is now visiting Indonesia, met with DPRK officials in Geneva in March to try to push forward the denuclearization process but achieved no breakthrough.
Under an agreement reached by the six-party talks in Beijing in February last year, the DPRK agreed to abandon all nuclear weapons and nuclear programs and declare all its nuclear programs and facilities by the end of last year in exchange for diplomatic and economic incentives.
However, the DPRK missed the deadline, although there was reported progress in its nuclear disablement and declaration.
