The Colombian government authorized Friday the extradition of a former paramilitary chief to the United States where he is accused of illicit drug trafficking and money laundering.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Friday signed a decree approving the extradition of Carlos Mario Jimenez Naranjo alias "Macaco," said presidency officials, although they did not say when the extradition will be enforced.
"Macaco" will be handed over to the U.S. where courts in Florida and District of Columbia accuse him of illicit drug trafficking, money laundering and financing of terrorism.
"Macaco", whose extradition was first authorized by Colombia's Supreme Court Wednesday, will become the first paramilitary chief to be extradited to the United States.
The AUC was an extreme rightwing armed group with some 31,000 paramilitary troops combating against the leftist guerrillas.
The group completed its demobilization in July 2006, after the government pledged to massively reduce sentences for AUC leaders in return for telling the truth about its alleged crimes, which include hundreds of murders.
