Babies born in the first quarter in Chile are mostly delivered by unmarried single mothers, according to figures released Friday by the Civil Registration and Identification Service.
During the first three months of the year, 40,892 out of the 64,032 newborns were delivered by unmarried single mothers, said the service.
In the Metropolitan, the most developed region where the capital city Santiago is located, single mothers gave birth to 17,090 babies, while 10,619 babies were born to married-couple families.
In other parts of the country, single-mother births also outnumbered those from married couples.
The Biobio region had 2,865 children born to married-couple families, while 4,119 were delivered by single mothers and the Valparaiso region registered 1,945 marriage births in contrast to 3,867 births out of marriage. Source: Xinhua
