The U.S. ambassador to Mexico has urged lawmakers in Washington to approve a 500-million-dollar fund to combat cross-border crime in Central America, local daily "Reforma" reported Friday.

Tony Garza has been pressing for Congress approval of the fund for the crime fighting Merida Initiative and discussed the issue with U.S. President George W. Bush, lawmakers and federal officials in a recent tour.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon Thursday also urged the U.S. Congress to approve the Merida Initiative, which was presented to it in March 2007.

The initiative, hammered out by the Mexican and U.S. governments, aims to finance campaigns by Mexico and other Central American countries against across-border crime.

Lawmakers in the United States had proposed to cut the budget plan for the fund from 500 million to 296.5 million dollars to pay for military operations in Iraq.
