A delegation of the United Nations Peace building Commission (PBC) started a six-day mission to Burundi Saturday to assess how to help the Central African nation with its reconstruction.
Led by Ambassador Johan L. Lovald, Permanent Representative of Norway to the UN, the seven-member team will meet with government authorities and representatives of regional groups, including the African Union and the Conference on the Great Lakes Region.
The mission, the PBC's second visit following its first last April, seeks to examine the situation on the ground, in particular the resumed fighting between the National Defense Forces and the rebel Palipehutu-FNL forces.
Burundi is trying to rebuild itself following a brutal civil war that began in 1993 between its Hutu majority and Tutsi minority.
The government and Palipehutu-FNL signed a ceasefire agreement in 2006, but the implementation of the agreement was obstructed by the rebels' pursuit of a power-sharing agreement that the government has rejected. Source: Xinhua
