Jordan Nuclear Energy Commission(JNEC) announced Thursday that the country will float an international tender to invite bids for the design and construction of its first uranium mine by the end of 2008, local Jordan Times reported.

This is a part of Jordan's peaceful nuclear energy ambition, as the resources-scarce country is seeking an alternative source to generate electricity and desalinize water, said the report.

Jordan is also planning to establish a strategic partnership with leading international companies in areas of uranium extraction and utilization, said JNEC president Khalid Touqan, adding that the government is talking cooperation agreements with countries including the United States, France, Canada, Russia and China.

Touqan has met with a Canadian delegation, striking a deal to be inked by the end of this summer. He also plans to visit South Korea, which has offered the Kingdom a nuclear reactor.
