Slovakia wants to deepen its relations with Syria, Slovak Foreign Minister Jan Kubis said after meeting with his visiting Syrian counterpart Walid Mualem in Bratislava, Slovakia, on Tuesday.

"We are interested in a meeting and talks on the presidents' level," Kubis said, adding that Slovakia would also like to develop economic cooperation with Syria.

For his part, Mualem said that Syrian President Asad might visit Slovakia, according to news reaching here from Bratislava, capital of Slovakia on Tuesday.

The EU demands that Syria play a more active role in the solution to the Middle East conflict, Kubis said, adding that this is also why Slovakia, too, should lead a dialogue with Damascus.

It is positive and useful for Slovakia and Syria to develop bilateral contacts and cooperation, Kubis pointed out.
