Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo left Saturday for Los Angeles from Osaka, where her chartered flight made an emergency landing shortly after midnight Friday when her husband Jose Miguel Arroyo fell ill.

Her 62-year-old husband apparently suffered a heart attack during the flight from Manila, which had been heading for Los Angeles, and was taken to the Osaka Prefecture-run Senshu Critical Care Medical Center in Izumisano.

Arroyo spent the night at the medical center, where her husband is believed remaining to continue treatment, Kyodo News Agency quoted informed sources as saying.

But the husband is already out of critical conditions, according to Philippine media reports Saturday.

The Philippine president left Kansai International Airport and is scheduled to stop in Los Angeles before flying to Lima, Peru, to attend this weekend's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit.

The husband, a lawyer, have undergone triple bypass surgery at a Manila hospital in April last year. A philippino government statement said doctors on board decided on an emergency landing because Mr. Arroyo exhibited the same symptoms as before he underwent heart surgery in 2007.
