The UN Security Council unanimously adopted on Thursday a presidential statement on Myanmar calling for efforts to achieve "an inclusive national reconciliation" in the country.

"The Security Council stresses the need for the government of Myanmar to create the necessary conditions, for a genuine dialogue" with the opposition, so as to "achieve an inclusive national reconciliation with the direct support" of the United Nations, said the statement read out by Ghana's UN Ambassador Leslie Christian, the council's president for October.

The 15-member body calls for efforts by the government and all other parties concerned to work together toward a "de-escalation of the situation and a peaceful solution," he said.

The council also calls on the government to "take all necessary measures to address the political, economic, humanitarian, and human rights issues that are the concern of its people and emphasizes that the future of Myanmar lies in the hands of all of its people."

Noting an invitation by the government to UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari, the council welcomes the recent mission by Gambari to the country and "underscores its support for his returnas early as possible, in order to facilitate concrete actions and tangible results."

The council also urges the government and all parties concerned to "cooperate fully" with Gambari, Christian said.

The council welcomes the "important role" played by the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in resolving the situation and encourages the "sustained support and engagement of the international community in helping Myanmar," he added.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced Thursday that he is sending Gambari back to the region this weekend to meet with regional partners about the situation in Myanmar.

"Gambari will begin his consultations in Thailand on Monday before continuing to Malaysia, Indonesia, India, China and Japan, with a view to returning to Myanmar shortly thereafter," Ban said in a statement issued by his press office.

Gambari, who just ended a four-day mission to Myanmar from Sept.29 through Oct. 2 amid widespread mass demonstrations by Buddhist monks in several parts of the country since Sept. 18, deeply exchanged views with Myanmar leaders on domestic situation and made widespread contacts with local people.
