Top U.S. nuclear negotiator Christopher Hill said in Tokyo Saturday that the team of U.S. experts will start the process to disable the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s Yongbyon nuclear facilities on Monday.
Hill, also assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, told Japanese media that the team is scheduled to arrive at Yongbyon on Sunday.
To ensure the safety of the experts, the radiation of the fuel storage pool has to be cleared as soon as possible, Hill was quoted by Kyodo News as saying.
Hill met on Friday with his Japanese counterpart Kenichiro Sasae, director general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.
The two negotiators talked about the disablement process and issues related with the declaration of nuclear projects, and exchanged ideas on the upcoming six-party talks delegation chiefs' meeting and the foreign ministers' meeting.
Hill arrived in Tokyo Friday afternoon following his visits to China and South Korea earlier this week.
