Gaston Tong Sang, French Polynesia's former president, has announced that he will run for president in territorial elections in January with a new party.
The former president has founded a party, Polynesia My Home, which he said would promote French Polynesia's autonomy from France, Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio reported late Wednesday.
The French parliament last month brought in a new electoral law for the territory, under which the January elections will be held.
Tong Sang has said his aim is to change the way politics work in the territory.
"Unfortunately we are far from being financially independent," he was quoted as saying.
"Therefore we can't enjoy this political autonomy," he said.
He said his aim is to help French Polynesia to depend less on the French money.
"We need to develop the economic sectors like tourism, fishing, pearling and exports of high value added products, like vanilla," he said.
"To summarize, my slogan is more private sector, less public service," he said. Source: Xinhua
