Signing of the landmark "ASEAN Charter" by ASEAN leaders at the 13th ASEAN Summit in Singapore on Tuesday will pave the way for a human rights mechanism to be in place in the 10-member regional grouping, Malaysian official said Tuesday.
The charter, which stresses on human rights' principles, can be the thrust for the mechanism, Malaysian Foreign Ministry parliamentary secretary Ahmad Shabery Cheek said in the parliament.
"The acceptance of the ASEAN Charter Tuesday will pioneer the mechanism for human rights in the region.
"With the mechanism in place, ASEAN human rights, integrity and credibility issues can be discussed," Malaysian national news agency Bernama quoted Ahmad Shabery as saying.
"We want all ASEAN members to be coherent and stronger nations," he said. Source:Xinhua
