A spokesperson of New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark told media Thursday that Clark has no recollection of texting during a speech by Queen Elizabeth II.
The spokesperson's remarks came in response to British media's critical view of "diminishing respect for the Crown."
The Daily Express has reported that Prime Minister Clark was spotted texting on her mobile phone during the Queen's opening speech at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting last Friday in Uganda's capital Kampala.
But New Zealand radio channel Newstalk ZB reported that "Clark's spokesperson said it (texting) did not happen."
A New Zealand pro-republic group held that "Clark is clearly half-hearted in her statements on the monarchy."
A press statement from Republican Movement of New Zealand called the Prime Minister "show leadership on the issue, as her fellow social democrat leaders around the Commonwealth are."
So far only 16 Commonwealth nations including New Zealand still retain the Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, and Australia is reportedly expected to hold a new referendum on becoming a republic after electing a Labor government.
