President Pervez Musharraf's oath taking as civilian head of state and the smooth transition of command of Pakistan Army will facilitate the political process and help strengthen the key institutions, caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan Mohammed mian Soomro said on Thursday.

Talking to the caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh province Abdul Qadir Halipoto who called on him here, Soomro said that the forthcoming general elections would further pave the way for the establishment of democratic norms and culture.

"It is in our national interest that we seek the will of the people for future political course through the ballot box," he said.

Soomro was quoted by Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) as saying that the caretaker governments at the Federal and Provincial level have a great responsibility towards the nation to ensure that elections held in a free, fair and transparent manner.

This obligation could only be fulfilled by extending every possible support to the functionaries of the Election Commission in every constituency, he added.

Soomro said while the caretaker government would fulfill its commitment to facilitate the political process, it was incumbent upon all the stake holders to follow the Code of Conduct issued by the Election Commission for holding the general elections in a smooth manner.

Musharraf took oath as a civilian president for another five-year term on Thursday. He gained a sweeping win in the presidential polls on Oct. 6.
