Afghan National Army and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Friday started an operation to retake the southern Afghan town of Musa Qala from Taliban insurgents, an ISAF statement said.
"In order to assist the Afghan National Army, ISAF Forces have launched an insertion of troops by helicopter on the edge of the town," the ISAF said.
This operation, according to the statement, will continue for the next few days.
Troops from the Afghan National Army supported by ISAF Forces have been conducting operations in the north area of southern province Helmand, where the lawless town Musa Qala is located, since the beginning of November, the statement said.
Afghan government forces backed by foreign troops have intensified operations against anti-government elements across the country over the months as the Taliban were trying to overrun some districts in western and southern provinces through attacks.
Rising militancy-related violence and conflicts so far have killed over 6,000 people mostly insurgents this year in the war-torn country. Source: Xinhua
