The 22nd anniversary of the signing of the charter for establishing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is being celebrated throughout the SAARC region Saturday.
According to SAARC Secretariat based in the Nepali capital Kathmandu, the charter was signed during the first-ever summit meeting of the heads of state or government held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Dec. 8, 1985.
The heads of state or government of the member states of SAARC have issued commemorative messages on the Charter Day. Besides, member states are celebrating the day by organizing various activities in a befitting manner.
Likewise, SAARC regional centers, SAARC apex bodies and SAARC recognized bodies are observing the day with the holding of various commemorative events.
Founded in 1985, the SAARC includes Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
