Thousands of people in Bali on Saturday staged a rally to call for more action to tackle climate change as people around the world join the Global Day of Action on Climate Change.

Activists from across Indonesia gathered on the island of Bali, where government officials, scientists and representatives from over 180 countries are holding the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Many participants call for climate justice and deep cuts in emissions across the developed world.

"Negotiators inside the U.N. talks in Bali must listen to the voices of people in the streets and tackle these talks with more urgency," said Coordinator Joseph Zacune from Friends of the Earth International.

"People all around the world are demanding climate justice. The pressure is on government delegates here in Bali to deliver the outlines of a future agreement which recognizes the rights and needs of people in the developing world," said the coordinator from the event organizer.

Others want to see an end to the promotion of agrofuels as a solution to climate change and protection for the world's forests and the people who depend on them to survive.

"Climate change is already affecting the lives of people here in Indonesia. It is crucial that the solutions being put forward do not make that situation worse," said Deputy Director Farah Sofifrom Friends of the Earth Indonesia.

"Demand for agrofuels is contributing to deforestation and increasing carbon emissions. This is bad news for the climate and bad news for forest people as it destroys the very nature resources they depend upon."

Events to mark the Global Day of Action are taking place in more than 80 countries around the world.
