The ongoing NATO-backed Afghan forces operation against Taliban to recapture the strategically important Musa Qala district in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province have led to the arrest of two Taliban commanders, a press release of Afghan Defense Ministry said Sunday.
"Our troops made captive Mullah Matin Akhund and Mullah Rahim Akhund, two commanders of Taliban in the area," the press release added.
It also added that the troops backed by airpower had inflicted heavy casualties on the militants, but it did not give exact figure.
Fell to Taliban hand last February, Musa Qala has enabled Taliban fighters to reorganize and target government and NATO troops in the southern and eastern provinces of the post-Taliban country.
Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi said Saturday that Taliban had lost 12 of their fighters while the militants rejected the claim and added 35 soldiers were killed on the second day of the operation.
Government troops, according to today's press release of Afghan Defense Ministry, are just 2 km away from the district headquarters of Musa Qala.
Taliban hasn't yet made any comments.
