Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the talks between India and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the India-U.S. nuclear deal are progressing well, according to the newspaper the Hindu on Monday.
Mukherjee, convener of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-Left nuclear committee, said in Kolkata, the second largest city of India, on Sunday that the Nov. 16 meeting of the committee decided that the talks should continue and the outcome of the talks will be presented to the committee for its consideration before the government finalizes its findings.
The text of the IAEA Safeguards Agreement is a highly technical issue and it was being worked out. After the "language" is determined, it will be placed before the committee, he said.
There is no reason to believe that the government was facingany immediate threat of withdrawal of support by the Left parties, he said.
"Nothing is happening to suggest that the Left parties will withdraw their support tomorrow and elections will be called the next day," Mukherjee said, adding that rumors of such threats would be there "as long as coalition governments exist."
