The remains of Australian soldiers who died in Vietnam during the Vietnam War were repatriated on Dec.17, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Tuesday.

This was the second repatriation of remains of Australian soldiers from Vietnam since the war ended in 1975.

At the repatriation ceremony, the remains and some belongings of the Australian soldiers, retrieved from a joint search in the two southern provinces of Ba Ria Vung Tau and Dong Nai last month, were handed over to a representative of the Australian government.

The government's representative praised Vietnam's humanitarian policy and thanked the Vietnamese government and people for their cooperation in the process, the newspaper said.

Vietnamese and Australian forensic experts had jointly conducted initial tests on the remains at a laboratory in Vietnam.
