Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Friday that the assassination of Pakistani opposition party leader Benazir Bhutto reminds people again of "the menace that terrorism poses to Pakistan and to all civilized societies."
In his letter to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Lee said, "The terrorists are doing their utmost to derail the electoral process in Pakistan and undermine the country's stability."
He added, "They cannot and must not succeed. The perpetrators of this heinous act must be swiftly brought to justice."
Singapore's President S.R. Nathan also wrote to his Pakistani counterpart Musharraf, saying he hopes that the perpetrators of what he calls "the senseless act of cowardice" will be swiftly brought to justice.
Singapore's leaders also sent condolence letters to Bhutto's husband Asif Ali Zardari.
President Nathan said, "Her death is a great loss to the people of Pakistan. She had served Pakistan with conviction and courage."
Lee Hsien Loong also wrote to Zardari that Bhutto was "a courageous woman who remained resolute in her political conviction and sense of mission."
Lee added that Bhutto will be remembered "for her indomitable spirit, her devotion to Pakistan, and the ultimate sacrifice she has made in serving a greater cause."
Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said in his letter to Zardari that "she was deeply committed to the future of Pakistan," and knowing the threats to her life, especially after the October assassination attempt when she returned to Pakistan after being in exile for eight years, she "chose to stay the course."
