Suspected left-wing rebel force the New People's Army (NPA) staged two attacks Saturday night, killing a village official and wounding a government soldier, said military and police on Sunday.
NPA rebels ambushed Saturday night a convoy of government soldiers in the remote island province of Palawan in southwest Philippines, wounding at least one government soldier, said the military.
A military report cited initial details indicating the ambush took place in Taytay town in Palawan, which is a long island dividing the South China Sea from the Sulu Sea.
The government soldiers were in a convoy that included an M-151 jeep and an M-35 6-x-6 truck when an undetermined number of NPA rebels fired at them, said the report.
The attack took place two weeks after three government soldiers were killed by NPA in the town of San Vicente, some 50 kilometers away from Taytay town.
Police said a composite team of military and police personnel were deployed in the area to go after the fleeing rebels.
In a separate attack allegedly staged by the NPA, a member of a local village council was shot dead in Panganiban town in Catanduanes province in eastern Philippines Saturday night.
Local officials said around 13 armed NPA rebels entered the town and killed the official after dragging him away from his home into the street.
The NPA is a 6,000 strong rebel force fighting government forces since 1969 in the countryside.
